Founding Board

Help Us Build Something New

Triton Federal Credit Union needs seven founding subscribers to complete its charter application with the NCUA. These volunteers become the Credit Union's first Board of Directors — shaping its mission, policies, and future from day one.

What is a subscriber? Under federal credit union law, a credit union charter application requires a minimum of seven "subscribers" — individuals who formally commit to serve on the founding Board of Directors. Subscribers sign the charter application and are named in the NCUA filing. All board positions except the Chair/CEO are volunteer roles.

What to Expect

Board service at a de novo credit union is meaningful work. Pre-charter, the commitment is relatively light — reviewing documents, attending monthly planning meetings (virtual), and signing charter filings. Post-charter, the Board meets monthly and is responsible for setting strategic direction and policy oversight. Time commitment: approximately 4–6 hours per month.

All board members receive NCUA-provided training for de novo credit union directors at no cost. No prior credit union experience is required — relevant professional expertise is what matters.

Open Positions

Compensated Post-Charter
Chair / Chief Executive Officer
Seat 1 of 7  ·  Volunteer pre-charter, ~$90K salary post-charter

The CEO leads the day-to-day operations of the Credit Union and serves as the Chair of the Board. This is the one compensated board officer position permitted under NCUA regulations. Pre-charter, the CEO serves as a volunteer. Upon NCUA charter approval, the CEO transitions to a compensated role.

What we're looking for:

  • Minimum 5 years of credit union or community banking leadership experience
  • Deep commitment to the credit union mission and small business communities
  • Working knowledge of NCUA regulations, BSA/AML requirements, and lending compliance
  • Based in or willing to relocate to the York County / Charlotte area
  • Ability to commit as a volunteer through the charter process (estimated 1–2 years)
Volunteer
Treasurer / Chief Financial Officer
Seat 2 of 7  ·  Board Treasurer

The Treasurer oversees the financial integrity of the Credit Union, reviews financial statements monthly, and chairs the budget committee. This is a volunteer position. A contractor arrangement for ongoing accounting services may be established in Year 2.

What we're looking for:

  • Active CPA license (South Carolina preferred)
  • Experience with financial institution accounting, GAAP, or nonprofit financial management
  • Ability to review monthly financial reports and the annual audit
  • Familiarity with NCUA call report requirements is a plus, not a requirement
Volunteer
Credit Committee Chair / Lending Officer
Seat 3 of 7  ·  Loan policy and credit oversight

The Credit Committee Chair oversees the Credit Union's lending policies, reviews loan portfolio performance, and ensures fair lending compliance. This role helps set the tone for the Credit Union's approach to small business and consumer lending.

What we're looking for:

  • Experience in consumer lending, commercial lending, or credit underwriting
  • Knowledge of fair lending laws (ECOA, Fair Housing Act) preferred
  • Small business owner or banker who understands the credit needs of entrepreneurs
  • SC mortgage loan originator license or willingness to obtain if required
Volunteer
Secretary / General Counsel
Seat 4 of 7  ·  Board Secretary and legal advisor

The Secretary maintains Board minutes, ensures bylaw compliance, and provides legal perspective on major contracts and policy decisions. This is a governance and advisory role — not a legal representation engagement.

What we're looking for:

  • Active South Carolina Bar license required
  • Experience in financial services, corporate, or regulatory law preferred
  • No active client conflicts with the Credit Union's field of membership
  • Commitment to the credit union cooperative model
Volunteer
Vice Chair / Small Business Director
Seat 5 of 7  ·  The member voice on the Board

This seat exists for the member who needs no credentials beyond running a business. The Small Business Director represents the real-world perspective of the people Triton FCU is built to serve. If you've ever been frustrated with banking hours, fees, or lack of local lending — this seat is for you.

What we're looking for:

  • Active small business owner in York County, SC or Mecklenburg County, NC
  • Member (or prospective member) of the York County or Charlotte Area Chamber
  • Community credibility and willingness to advocate for the Credit Union
  • No finance background required — bring your perspective as a business owner
Volunteer
Supervisory Committee Chair / Risk & Compliance
Seat 6 of 7  ·  Independent oversight function

The Supervisory Committee is the independent oversight body of the Credit Union, separate from the Board of Directors. The Chair arranges the annual audit, reviews member complaints, and ensures the Credit Union is operating safely and in compliance with all applicable regulations.

What we're looking for:

  • Background in risk management, compliance, internal audit, or financial services regulation
  • CFE, CIA, CISA, or similar professional credential preferred
  • BSA/AML compliance knowledge is highly valued
  • Must be independent — cannot simultaneously serve as a Board officer
